2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. After the epochal events of 1989, countries along and beyond this line were compelled to reassess their positions in every aspect: social, political, cultural and economic. Western holidaymakers, accustomed to travelling, were fascinated by these new destinations to the East. For travel operators specialising in unusual, exotic or unspoilt destinations, the vast natural landscapes and unfamiliar cultures ‘over there" offered a potential Eldorado.

The downside: poor transport, accommodation and service infrastructures presented and still present multiple problems, while persistent ethnic and border conflicts, threats to the natural and cultural heritage and an ever-growing gap between rich and poor are still enormous challenges for civil society and the economic reorientation of post-Communist governments beyond the ‘Green Belt".

On this anniversary, the 19th Reisepavillon will showcase exemplary tourism offers from these countries presenting nature conservation and regional development projects and other measures that have emerged since 1989 for discussion.
